British 4 Nations Championships, Glasgow, 2012

Jun 14, 2012

The British 4 Nations Championships took place on 3rd June and were held at the Kelvin Hall International Sports Arena in Glasgow.

With all four of the home nations represented, 460 competitors and 801 competitor entries the event was a huge success and continues to grow year on year.

8 Tatami's were in operation all day to accommodate the 74 categories and credit must go to the organisers for the smooth running of the event.

This year the Disability Kata section was expanded and there was a new section for wheelchair users, both sections were inspirational and emotional to watch. Jonathan Mottram, recent European Bronze Medallist, told BKF Vice-President Mike Billman, that he was amazed at the performance of all competitors, in particular Peter McCann in the final, especially as he ended up exactly where he started. Jonathan said that Peter's stances were so exact, and Peter is registered as being blind!

Another change this year was the free spectator entry to the event which had the desired effect of bringing in a bigger crowd to cheer on the competitors, the atmosphere was electric.

The best in Britain came together to compete and entertain and they did not disappoint. The quality of the performances on the mats was second to none with outstanding performances in both Kata and Kumite. Every one of the competitors who stepped out on to the mats are to be commended for their efforts, talent and dedication to the sport, they are all fantastic ambassadors for Karate.

Referees, Judges, and Table Officials are also to be commended for their contribution. There was a great sense of camaraderie amongst the officials from all four Home Nations and everybody worked tirelessly to ensure that the competition ended on time, which it did.

Well done to all concerned.
