The British International Open, held over the weekend of the 6/7 October 2012, witnessed a category for people with disabilities that attracted 13 entries from 5 different nations, which resulted in the category being divided over two separate competition areas to ensure that it was run efficiently. This is a massive expansion on numbers from previous years and I am sure that the BKF events will continue to attract increasing numbers of competitors to this category in the future. Considering comments from competitors, coaches and spectators, it has become apparent that this category will continue to be very well supported. The category itself ran very smoothly with positive comments received from all involved, all of the officials presented themselves impeccably and they should be congratulated.
4 competitors attended from England, 4 from Scotland, 2 from Estonia, 2 from Wales and 1 from Ireland. During the opening ceremony, Derek Darvell (Intellectual Impairment) and Peter McCann (Visual Impairment) gave a display of their katas, which was received with a standing ovation, lasting over two minutes. All of the entrants spoken to, had a really good time and enjoyed competing at such a prestigious event as The British International Open.
